DogFest 2013 Pawsitively Great!

Baltimore Humane Society’s DogFest was a great success with the biggest attendance ever for the no-kill shelter’s dog day extravaganza. Thousands of animal lovers came out to enjoy the day’s festivities, many of them often remarking how “they had no idea how huge this event was.” People came with and without their pooches, all leaving with big smiles on their faces despite the record heat.

Some participated in the Paws on Parade Walkathon and chose to walk either the 1 mile or 1.6 mile path through the beautiful wildlife preserve. This was the inaugural year for Paws on Parade to be held at DogFest, so there was also an official ribbon cutting ceremony. Special Olympics Maryland athletes teamed up with the shelter to lead the cutting. And Yukon, the Yukon Medical Fund’s namesake, then led the walk. His presence was a reminder of the critical need for donations to Baltimore Humane Society’s Medical Fund so that other homeless animals like him can get the care they need at the no-kill shelter.

Over at DogFest, owners were enjoying the antics of their dogs who happily played games like Bowling, Hide ‘n Seek, Bubble Chase, Over/ Under/ Thru, and Musical Sit ’n Stay. Everyone loved the opportunity to try their skill at agility on the equipment in the enormous agility yard! The more artistic dogs created their own Rembrandt at the paw painting booth.

Dogs lined up to take a dip in the swimming pool to get relief from the heat. Then they headed over to the contest area. Emceed by 101.9 FM radio personality, Fran Lane, and Eddie Applefeld, WCBM’s Mr. Entertainment, it was one hilarious contest after another. There was Best Kisser, Best Tail Wagger, Best Costume, Best Trick, and even Owner-Pet Look Alike! Celebrity judges did their best to select the winners, but it wasn’t easy. Judges included WJZ-TV 's Bob Turk, WMAR-TV's Kelly Swoope, WBFF FOX 45's Patrice Sanders and Tom Rodgers, 101.9 Lite FM’s Greg Carpenter, 92Q’s Pork Chop, Lil Black, and Mike Crosby, Molly’s Hope Medical Rescue, Delegate Jon Cardin, Councilwoman Vicki Almond, Senator Jim Brochin, and even Miss Maryland 2013, Christina Denny.

There was so much more to the day, including a kids’ section and fabulous food section filled with a large assortment of vendors.

If you’re a cat lover, don’t feel left out. Baltimore Humane Society will be holding Catsino on Saturday, November 16th at Mt. Washington Tavern. For tickets to this fun night of faux gambling go to http://bmorehumane.org/events/catsino.
