Garo and Racker: Hometown Heroes
|

Elizabeth Kreitler and her
two canine partners, Racker and Garo, are veterans of
search and rescue. The dogs are her companions
certainly, but have a much more important purpose.
Racker and Elizabeth are members of the elite Virginia
Task Force 1, part of the Federal Emergency Management
Agency’s network of emergency responders certified in
urban search and rescue (USAR).

challenges. Thanks to volunteer efforts by many of your
fellow members in this past year 2011 your association
has continued to innovate, communicate and represent
your professional needs and concerns.

Guess What
I Saw?
An 11-month-old, castrated male, domestic shorthaired
cat was referred to a veterinary emergency and referral
clinic with a primary complaint of urinary blockage. The
referring veterinarian (rDVM) had diagnosed a urethral
obstruction earlier that afternoon, but could not pass a
urinary catheter.

Review of
Veterinary Pharmacy Laws and Regulations
Our day to day practice is governed by many laws and
regulations. While some of these regulations are quite
easy to follow because we are confronted with them on a
daily basis, others may require more review, as we do
not need to know them on a regular basis. The State
Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (SBVME) routinely
sees cases related to lack of knowledge of the Code of
Maryland Regulations (COMAR). As a result of this, a
review of veterinary pharmacy laws and regulations is in
order, which includes requirements on prescribing,
dispensing, and disposing of controlled substances
relative to a veterinary pharmacy.

Joe Flacco Brings Awareness to Baltimore Humane Society
If you live or practice in
the Baltimore area you may have noticed billboards
featuring the Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco, as
spokesperson for Baltimore Humane Society. The focus of
the campaign is to encourage Marylanders to team up with
the Baltimore Humane Society to adopt, volunteer or
donate to the area’s only no-kill shelter.
