New MVMA Student Chapter at VMRCVM

by Alicia Agnew, VMRCVM, Class of 2013

A new student club has been started at the Virginia- Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. The MVMA student chapter has been started to provide networking and learning opportunities to ALL students attending VMRCVM, and not just to Maryland residents.

On February 23, 2012, the first chapter meeting was held. Dr. Armitage, current president of the MVMA, traveled to VMRCVM to give a short talk on the state organization. After speaking for 20 minutes, he answered questions from students for another half hour.

Approximately 20 students participated, despite the evening schedule. Dr. Valerie Ragan serves as the club’s faculty advisor and she is very enthusiastic about the club’s goals.

“The MVMA has been working hard to engage, support, and promote veterinary students and VMRCVM," she says. "This new student chapter of the MVMA will provide an opportunity for students to engage in conversations with a variety of veterinarians and others who will inform and potentially impact their future decisions and profession. We look forward to bringing in speakers who will be relevant to veterinary medicine and topics that will be of interest to all veterinary students. This is a great opportunity for MVMA to engage with our future colleagues, and I’m proud to be able to support the leadership shown by the students who initiated this chapter.”

So look out for more news about the club as we expand and encourage student attendance at local VMAs!
