Veterinary Technician
The veterinary technician is responsible for performing advanced
veterinary treatment under the supervision of a veterinarian
licensed by the State of Maryland. Duties include: providing
exceptional patient care performing various veterinary medical

patients receiving CT and MRI scans, as well as working closely

HJF is seeking a Veterinary Technician for the Center for
Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) located at the
Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in
Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and
programmatic support services to CNRM.The Center for
Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) is a collaborative
intramural federal program involving the US Department of
Defense and the National Institutes of Health and was developed
to bring together the expertise of clinicians and scientists
across disciplines to catalyze innovative approaches to
Traumatic Brain Injury research.
Technician will support the Translational Imaging Facility (TIF).
Individual will be responsible for handling and preparing
animals involved in non-invasive imaging protocols (such as
positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI), and computed tomography (CT)). Will provide laboratory
and technical support to senior technical and professional
staff.
Responsibilities:
1. Performs basic animal care within prescribed IACUC/DLAM
standards related to translational imaging studies to include
PET, MRI, and CT and small animal monitoring.
2. Performs rodent IV injections, primarily tail vein.
3. Assists with the preparation of technical reports, summaries,
and protocols.
4. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains
databases.
5. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and
other procedures.
6. Assists in the proper disposal of radioactive or hazardous
materials.
7. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories
and logbooks.
8. Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory
area clean.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Animal
husbandry, Rodent tail vein injection experience, Knowledge of
radiation safety; ability to follow general instructions; good
communication, organization, and analytical skills.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Associates degree in a
scientific discipline, previous animal experience.
Minimum Experience: 2 to 4 years of laboratory and animal
experience, specifically rodent experience.
Physical Capabilities: Handling various chemicals; proper
handling of radioactive materials, handling of rodents.

The Small Animal Surgery Ward
Technician is responsible for providing technical support to
clinical faculty and senior veterinary students in the medical
and surgical sections of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital,
including ward and treatment room management, administering
treatments and medications ordered by clinical faculty, and
animal care administration/management. Special nursing care
procedures may include special diagnostic procedures, infection
control/isolation management, supports OR procedures, and
Central Sterile Supply support. If licensed, may be assigned to
provide short-term support to Anesthesiology following training
in this area. Trained licensed or unlicensed veterinary
technicians may be assigned to provide short-term support to the
Intensive Care Unit. Assist in other areas directed by
supervisor. Provides after hours on-call support as assigned.
Successful candidate must have working knowledge of basic
companion and large animal anatomy and physiology as a result of
courses or experience; ability to handle and restrain all
species of animals; knowledge of surgical Suite 5nd central
sterile supply instrumentation and sterile techniques; good
communication and interpersonal skills required; rabies
prophylaxis will be required (provided by employer). Previous
experience in anesthesia and/or intensive care in a veterinary
medical setting is preferred; demonstrated knowledge of CPR and
experience in daily staff management is desired; certification

provides technical support to clinical faculty and senior

assists in the performance of regular and diagnostic special

Veterinary Technology license (LVT) or eligible, working
knowledge of basic nursing skills, working knowledge of basic
anesthetic equipment and monitoring, ability to place
intravenous catheters and to perform endotracheal intubation,
must be able to understand instructions and have excellent
communications and interpersonal skills. Rabies prophylaxis will
be required and provided by employer. Preferred qualifications
include working knowledge of CPR, experience in anesthesia
and/or intensive care in a veterinary medical setting, and
experience in special procedures and electrodiagnostics. Various
