Agricultural Inspector I, Animal
Health Option
Qualified applicants needed to perform inspections of licensed
veterinary hospitals for the State Board of Veterinary Medical
Examiners and licensable horse stables for the MD Horse Industry
Board. Duties include completing inspection forms, making
recommendations for corrective action, issuing certificates,

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school

disease control, in the care or management of livestock, or in

Veterinary Technician
The Department of Surgery of the University of Maryland School
of Medicine is seeking a research technician to support a very
productive surgical research program. The successful candidate
will be responsible for oversight and maintenance of surgical
facilities and equipment, along with providing and monitoring
postoperative care and treatment for laboratory animals. The
individual will work closely with surgeons, scientists,
engineers and veterinarians. The incumbent is required to work
in compliance with regulatory requirements associated with the
research environment (training in specifics of regulations will
be provided, but prior experience is welcome). Some
laboratory-based work will also be expected.

Requirements
Essential Duties: 1. Prepare the required equipment and
instruments for surgical study and assure that monitoring and
support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors,
scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition. 2.
Ensures that the surgical rooms are properly stocked with
supplies, clean and orderly and coordinates scheduling for
surgical areas. 3. Participates in research with large animals:
preparation, surgical assistance, animal care and monitoring,
and data collection. 4. Administer medications and fluids to the
animals as prescribed by the veterinarian and doctors and take
and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure,
blood flow, anesthetic recording, and medication, before, during
and after surgical procedures. 5. Collect and label tissue and
blood specimens for culture or microscopic examination or
diagnostics or pathologic analysis or other biological analysis.
6. Perform routine laboratory testing related to animal surgical
research and preparation 7. Maintenance and research activities,
such as: treatment records and inventory of all pharmaceuticals,
equipment and supplies, general housekeeping, wipe tests,
preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures and
specimens. 8. May perform administrative duties such as:
ordering, assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or
methods for laboratory experimentation, and ordering supplies.
Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree is required from a two
year American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Accredited
Veterinary Technician program is required. The successful
candidate must be able to perform these functions with general
supervision. The candidate with experience in the
medical/scientific documentation and good animal handling and
nursing skills are preferred. Required
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities General knowledge of the appropriate
handling of all species of laboratory animals. General knowledge
of and ability to use diagnostic, surgical, and standard
laboratory equipment such as radiology equipment, anesthesia
machines, steam sterilizers, endoscopes, ECG machines. Ability
to follow standard operating procedures; to wear and work in
personal protective equipment; to operate computers and other
standard office equipment; to supervise and train personnel; to
communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Internship in Avian and Exotic
Animal Medicine and Surgery
The internship is oriented toward avian and exotic companion
animals in order to prepare a candidate for either an ABVP or
ACZM residency. Both primary and referral cases are seen. This
is a non-rotating internship and the intern will work directly
under the supervision of the senior faculty member. However, out
rotations are possible. Previous interns have spent time at
another Avian/Exotic specialty practice, the National Aquarium
and the National Zoo. Primary case responsibility is encouraged
through the day service and on-call emergency care is expected.
Support from the emergency department and the senior faculty
member is available for the emergencies. Interns will work
closely with other departments in the hospital as is necessary
to address a patient’s problems.
Case rounds are carried out cage
side daily and journal discussions as well as didactic teaching
are conduct weekly. The intern will complete a grand rounds
presentation and is encouraged to research and publish or
present findings on scientific works to their colleagues.
Participation in rounds, journal club, and intern lectures with
the eight rotating interns is required. Internet access, a paid
subscription to VIN and an extensive library onsite (as well as
the NIH Medical Library only 20 miles away) are available. Our
location, just north of Washington DC, is close to many
cultural, educational, and recreational facilities.
