Purpose of Role: The focus of this position is to plan, manage and deliver the research and development projects of Mars Veterinary in accordance with set business priorities. Principal Accountabilities - Delivery of research and development projects to meet the agreed schedule from the Mars Veterinary project portfolio and strategic plan. With Commercial support, negotiates with, and manage external suppliers/partners in order to deliver successful project outcomes; ensure appropriate adherence to commercial standards in use of external suppliers. - Responsible for multiple R&D project budgets supporting the business - Negotiate access to internal resources (people and equipment) required for successful delivery projects whilst achieving balance with delivery of other project priorities - Instigate and manage sample collection studies as necessary part of project development - Report project plans, progress updates and outcomes to Mars Veterinary and Mars Symbioscience management teams. • Recommend policies and coordinate implementation to assure uniform animal care and use in accordance with The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animal, Animal Welfare Act, and Public Health Service guidelines.

• Supervise clinical and research veterinary staff by coordinating clinical rounds, procurement and maintenance of veterinary supplies, scheduling technical training requests, provide technical proficiency assessments and maintenance of animal records.

• Provide and document technical training and technical proficiency assessments of CMS staff

• Participate in planning and execution of facility moves involving animals, personnel, accessory and ancillary related equipment
  Advise the scientific staff on protocol design, disease interference, and other factors that may complicate or invalidate research results

• Oversee animal health surveillance program and compile written reports
  Provide animal disease investigation service for the intramural animal research facilities

• Provide diagnostic necropsy service and maintain database for necropsy reports
  Evaluate referral laboratories for enhancing diagnostics and PI submissions within NIA

• Coordinate quarantine for incoming animals of uncertain health status to prevent the introduction of pathogenic organisms

• Implement and coordinate the Post Approval Monitoring Program for NIA
  Manage import/export process; screen imports for health problems and provide health reports to outside institutions upon request. Lead import/export committee. Provide appropriate USDA accredited documentation for international animal exports.
  Serve as Attending Veterinarian on the NIA/IRP Animal Care and Use Committee. Provide pre review of animal study protocols as requested, and participate in convened mtgs, semi annual inspections.

• Interface with organizations, institutions, and committees concerned with the ethical and humane care and use of animals in research

  Revise Animal Disaster Preparedness document and procure necessary materials to activate plan

• Revise and finalize Veterinary Care Section of AAALAC Program Description. Provide input on the supporting sections and appendices as related to AAALAC program description submission. Synchronize old description to current practices from PD 2006- 2009. Provide post site visit communication to AAALAC international
  Draft and finalize document on clinical endpoints for aging animals to be included in the NIA Guidelines for Endpoints of Aging Animals.

• Conduct research studies independently and in collaboration with investigators
  Provide assistance and support for the changing needs of the program Coordinate schedules, absences, and leave with PM so that related facility tasks can be planned accordingly

• Ensure open, timely, and professional communication at all times with Animal Program Director, Project Manager, CMS staff, and NIA investigators
