Dr. John P.
O'Mara received MVMA's 2010 Presidential Lifetime
Achievement Award. |
John P. O’Mara, DVM has been
selected to receive the 2010 Presidential Lifetime
Achievement Award. This award was given in honor of Dr.
O’Mara’s years of dedicated and outstanding service to the
Maryland Veterinary Medical Association, as the first
“President’s Mentor” and for his continued involvement and
leadership of the Legislative and Technicians Committees.
His enthusiasm and drive are a testament to the definition
of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1970, Dr.
O’Mara practiced in Limerick, Pennsylvania for two years and
then Beltsville Veterinary Hospital in Beltsville, Maryland
until 1975. The same year he established a practice in
Ellicott City, MD known as Dunloggin Veterinary Hospital. In
1982, he with |
a group of veterinarians
funded and started the Emergency Veterinary Clinic in a
renovated gas station in Elkridge, MD. In 1990 the
practice had grown, requiring it to move to a larger
facility in Catonsville, Maryland.
Dr. O’Mara served as President of the Board of Directors
for the Maryland Veterinary Medical for ten years.
Between 1990 and 2004, Dr. O’Mara served on several
boards including an appointed position to the Maryland
State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, where he
served for five years as president of the board.
In 2004, Dr. O’Mara semi-retired from veterinary
practice and became active in Maryland Veterinary
Medical Association affairs. He has also served as
president for the MVMA. Dr. O’Mara is currently a
participant in the North American Veterinary Education
Consortium and is charged with insuring veterinary
medical education meets the needs of our changing
society.
Dr. O’Mara received a Governor’s Citation for service as
a member and president of the Maryland State Board of
Veterinary Medical Examiners in 2004. In 2005, he
received the Maryland Distinguished Veterinarian Award
presented by the Maryland Veterinary Medical
Association.
Dr. O’Mara currently resides in Ellicott City, MD with
his wife Judy. They have two children and two
grandchildren. As a leader and past president of the
American Veterinary Medical Association, as well as the
Maryland Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. O’Mara has
demonstrated sincere commitment and strong leadership; a
testament to the definition of the Lifetime Achievement
Award.
The Maryland Veterinary Medical Association is committed
to a leading role in the advancement of the science and
art of veterinary medicine throughout Maryland. MVMA
allows for veterinarians, registered veterinary
technicians and veterinary students to come together and
share ideas to further their professional and personal
development.
