If you are a practitioner of small animal or equine veterinary medicine, this is a premier opportunity for continuing education, business information and networking. There are also educational opportunities for technicians, farriers and students. Here is the speaker information we have to date:

Buffet Luncheon for All Attendees - 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Speaker: Linda Ellis, DVM
Topic: Avoiding Malpractice and Board Complaints

Professional Liability is another area of Risk Management for all veterinary practices. This presentation will focus on ways to avoid malpractice and license complaints. We will discuss the importance of communication since the majority of complaints involve some type of communication breakdown. Has anyone in your practice ever made a mistake that led to the injury or death of an animal? What if you are not sure if you did anything wrong? We will discuss how to handle this. The most common causes of malpractice and board complaints will be reviewed using actual claim examples and we will also discuss how to obtain informed owner consent and the importance of good record keeping.

About the Speaker: Dr. Ellis graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991 and practiced small animal medicine and surgery for 14 years. In 2005, she joined the AVMA Professional Liability Insurance Trust where she reviews malpractice claims, discusses potential claim situations with veterinarians, and makes regular visits to veterinary colleges to speak with the students. She also attends and presents at local, state, regional and national veterinary conferences on behalf of the PLIT as part of an educational outreach effort to help veterinarians avoid malpractice and board complaints.
